Research

Partners of the eHMIS Foundation are passionate about the promotion of research in the areas of health, health informatics and health information systems in developing countries.
The eHMIS application began within the context of a research, and will continue being develped as such. We work with a team of clinical experts, public health specialists and IT experts, all of whom are active in the eHMIS project at sourceforget.net.
Research phase I
In the first phase we researched on the extent to which electronic health records systems can be used to improve on the quality of health information management in developing countries, using Tororo District Hospital as a pilot site. The pilot research project was jointly sponsored by Institute of Medical Biometry, Heidelberg University Germany; EPOS Health Consultants, Germany; and MIFUMI, Uganda.
Research results can be seen in a publication due to be printed by Methods of Information in Medicine:
"Assessment of Data Quality of and Staff Satisfaction with an Electronic Health Record System in a Developing Country (Uganda): A Qualitative and Quantitative Study" S. P. Ndira, K. D. Rosenberger, T. Wetter, Institute of Medical Biometry and Informatics, Heidelberg University.

Research phase II
While we develop the application to link all processes in the hospital, we are preparing to undertake a research to assess the impact of monitoring, evaluating and improving technical and non-technical aspects sorrounding electronic health records in developing countries on the level of accuracy of routine health reports. This research undertaking is partly contracted by the National Library of Medicine, US.
